Dr Max Klimburg

Bio Dr Max Klimburg, an Austrian art historian and ethnologist, is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Ethnology of Vienna University. Encouraged by Karl Jettmar and funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), he started his field research in September of 1971, focusing on the Kafir society, arts and culture in former Kafiristan, today’s Nuristan, Afganistan. The last of his 18 field trips were in 2000 and 2002, funded by the same foundation. His publications include: The Kafirs of the Hindu Kush: Art and Society of the Waigal and Ashkun Kafirs (2 vols, Stuttgart, 1999).
