This is the first loan exhibition of Chinnery's work in Britain for over 50 years. George Chinnery, born London 1874, sailed to India in 1802 and spent the rest of his life either there or, following debt problems, in Canton, Macau and Hong Kong.
This exhibition comprises of some 100 of his works, in oil and watercolour. He immersed himself in the local cultures producing compelling and vivid work - landscapes, portraits and drawings of everyday life. Works by some of his contemporaries are included in the show.
