| Introduction | This was a Society tour with a difference. A year that, exceptionally, featured two tours gave us the opportunity for an experiment aimed at rekindling the spirit of the Society's early Asian ventures. Cultural sightseeing based on comfortable hotels would be on a back-burner this time: instead, we would head off into the wilds, live under canvas, and pursue a more strenuous lifestyle. Our chosen destination was the Altai Mountains in the extreme west of Mongolia, a range on the borders of China and Russia comparable to the Alps in both height and latitude: once there, we would split into two groups which would follow different itineraries, one trekking, the other horse-riding (as Mongolians do). |
